![]() Lily and Dunkin could be an agent for change. He does try so hard to understand and protect Lily. I think my favorite character was Lily’s Dad, who represents a huge chunk of the American population in proclaiming that “A boy is a boy is a boy.” Both Dunkin’s and Lily’s families are strong and (mostly) supportive, but Lily’s dad really struggled. I cannot imagine that someone could read this book and not come away more sensitive to transgender and bipolar individuals. Author Donna Gephart tackles some serious issues here – gender identity, bipolar disorder, bullying, abuse, grief, homosexuality – with grace and sensitivity. I loved this book! It’s a beautifully-written story of an emerging friendship between two eighth graders dealing with some pretty heavy secrets. Alternates between Lily’s and Dunkin’s voices. ![]() Dunkin is a boy who misses his father and deals daily with his bipolar disorder. ![]() Lily is a transgender teen who is taking small steps to embrace who she truly is: a girl with male anatomy. ![]()
